About the Author:

Julia lives in the countryside near Saint Louis with her beloved husband and an ever growing zoo of winged and furred wards. She holds a Bachelor’s of Fine Art and has traveled the world extensively. For all her rambles, Santa Fe, NM still retains the crown as her favorite dot on the map.

SPOTLIGHT: SEEKING SAFE HARBOR (SUDDENLY EVERYTHING CHANGED) BY ALBERT A. CORREIA

Seeking safe harbor

The Arthur family’s four-month cruise in the South Pacific was smooth sailing… until the GPS stopped working and the radio went silent. Almost capsized in a late night, near-collision at sea, questions raced through Zach Arthur’s mind as he replayed the series of events that had recently occurred. Mainly, why would a U.S. aircraft carrier try to run them over?
* * *
Something did not feel right… and it was not. The Arthurs soon found that life as they knew it would never be “normal” again. The whole world had gone mad, and one primary questioned remained:
Would they ever find safe harbor again?

About The Author:

Albert

I would never have guessed that feisty old Faustino would have his daughter-in-law arrested to keep her away from drugs. Nor would I have known that aging movie cowboy Wyatt Wyoming would ask Santa for a horse; and what problems that would create for St. Nick on Christmas Eve. Who could foretell that a Red Chinese sub would surface in front of a sailboat seeking a safe harbor, or that its skipper was a graduate of a California university? Certainly not me.
The characters determine what happens in my books, not me. I just record what they do and say. I sit down, turn on my computer, and the characters start acting out what is apparently quite normal for them. Frankly, it’s very enjoyable. You see, I could never dream up the crazy things they do and say, yet those things are normal to them. When you read the books I publish, you’ll see what I mean.
Following a successful career as a chamber of commerce executive in California, I retired to Costa Rica and began writing. Recently, Kamel Press, LLC, a young and innovative publishing company in the Unites States, contracted to publish some of my books. They published “Even in Eden,” an epic saga of intrigue in Costa Rica (which includes Faustino and his daughter-in-law, the beautiful but twisted Yessenia), and have contracted to publish several others. The boat seeking safe harbor is one of them. Wyatt Wyoming and many other colorful characters are part of a short story collection. A few of the stories are being published in small collections (see “Great New and Fun Holiday Stories”), and the full array of almost fifty fun (and somewhat different) stories will be published when time allows.
Meantime, I continue to write (or, more accurately, record the actions and words of wonderful characters) in Costa Rica, where a large community of gifted writers reside.

EXTRAORDINARY (ROUGH PASSAGE, BOOK ONE) BY AUTHOR K.M. HERKES

KM Herkes

A trip to the traveling carnival with two toddlers and a mobility-challenged parent isn’t most people’s definition of fun, but it’s closer than Valerie Wade usually gets. A few hours kicking sawdust and revisiting favorite childhood memories, that’s all she asks.

It’s her annual treat, a visit back in time to the carefree years before she learned that her blood carries a potential death sentence, before life beat her down and broke her spirit. It’s the one place where she can forget about secrets, debts and obligations for a few hours and remember what hope feels like.

Everything changes that night, under the bright lights and the striped awnings. The monsters and freaks aren’t in the sideshow tents. They’re walking the aisles, and before the carnival is done, Valerie will be taking her place among them.

About The Author:

I love stories that dance in the open spaces between genres, so those are what I write. Professional development has included classroom teaching, animal training, aquaculture, horticulture, retail operations, and customer service. Personal development is ongoing. Cats, baking, and flowers are involved.

My books play in the literary traffic, dodging between science and fantasy, present and future, to reach a sweet spot where characters come alive. Damaged souls, triumphs of the spirit, divided loyalties, and dialogue loaded with witty humor are recurring themes. I know I’ve hit my storytelling target when reviews start with, “This isn’t my usual read, but I took a chance,” and end with “And now I’ve read the whole series. I loved it and told all my friends to try it too.”

That happens a lot.

SPOTLIGHT: RETRIBUTION (THE DAGGER OF AITA, BOOK 1) BY S.J. WOLFF

Retribution

Throughout history we have been here. We were born of the union between the Watchers and the Daughters of Men. Our human hearts pump the blood of Angels through our veins yet, we are neither human nor angel. We are the Alimentatori, descendants of the divine, and this is just the beginning…

In my two-hundred and sixty three years I have witnessed much, yet nothing could have prepared me for the devastating murder of my brother, Julian. While he lies in stasis awaiting The Release, his killer roams the Lazio region of Italy free to seek other victims. But, all is not right behind the veil of this ancient landscape. Its beauty hides a world of ancient secrets, hidden agendas, and political intrigues. In order to extract my vengeance, I must first play a dangerous game according to another’s rules. Playing by the rules has never been my forte; toppling a game-board or two would suit me just fine! Regardless of the dangers that lie ahead, Retribution will be mine.

My name is Jacen Trudeau of the House of Samsaveel and I’m about to open Pandora’s Box.

About the Author:

A lover of superheroes and all things fantasy it was only natural to find a home within the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre. Growing up, the major influences in S.J.’s life were Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, the quintessential Star Wars, Robert Aspirin (his Mything series), Douglas Adams (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy), and of course J.R.R. Tolkien.

As a wife, mother of three, and US Navy Veteran. I have spent a great deal of my life in service to others. In late 2008 I realized that the one thing in my life that had not been given its due, was the love of my youth – writing. With the kids grown and my military service in the past, I made a pact with my Muse. I would put writing at the forefront and he would guide me to my ultimate goal, publication.

For the first two years I tried. I dabbled in historical romance. I got a third of the way through a novel before it lost its luster. The struggle frustrated me. I stepped away from the desk and glared at the screen as if it were the problem and not me. And then I met a young woman who wrote in a genre I’d never considered. I picked up one of her Urban Fantasies and within a few pages knew it was something I would like to try my hand at. I immediately sat down and wrote a scene – for the first time ever – in first person. What was created had a life I’d never seen in my writing before. After a lifetime of practicing my art, I’d found a new way to move forward.

Unfortunately, the right angle at fantasy and a good story alluded me. Then one day, while sitting in a workshop where the speaker was talking about her vampire series, my mind wandered. Through a crack, somewhere in the creative, a scene unfolded. Two characters came to life and played out a scene on a rooftop. I wrote the first couple of lines on the napkin next to me. When I got home, I wrote the scene. To my amazement, it was pretty good. I loved the characters. I loved the banter. I loved how writing it made me feel. Finally after so much struggle, my Muse had done it. He’d finally broken down the barrier that had kept the ideas at bay and given me a story which needed to be told. I’d found my niche in a genre known as Dark Contemporary Fantasy and the rest is, as they say, literary history.

INTERVIEW WITH DAWN HAWKS, AUTHOR OF WHERE DARKNESS WALKS

Donna Hawks Where Darkness Walks Donna Hawks

This is L.M. David doing a blog interview and spotlight on Donna Hawks, author of Where Darkness Walks. I would also like to add I have been authorized to giveaway an eBook copy of the book, which is good for today 5/30/2013, only. For those interested, please leave a comment below for a chance to win, include your email address. One lucky blogger will be selected at the end of the day. Best of luck to you.

Let’s start the interview.

Q. Tell me about yourself.

A. I am a retired Middle School teacher. I have always loved reading and writing. Most of my teaching years were teaching Literature. I loved finding books that I thought my students would enjoy. I had the best book collection in the whole school.

I love getting outside and riding my bike or walking. I’m an avid photographer.

Q. Your book, Where Darkness Walks (Mortgatha Trilogy Book 1), tell me about it.

A. Clarie has had her heart broken, and at the age of 16, she thinks her life if over. But she meets Patrick and knows they have a connection. While Clarie is refinishing an old armoire, she discovers it has a secret compartment where she finds a relic from another world—the shadow realm of Mortgatha. She doesn’t know anything about this other world until she is accidentally pushed through the dark, magic doors that lead there. Now she can’t find her way home, even with Patrick’s help.

Q. Describe the character Clarie.

A. Clarie is a very good girl, loves her dad, always tries to do the right thing. She is devastated when she gets caught in Mortgatha. She works very hard to keep her spirits up as she tries to find her way back to her home, but it’s difficult. She discovers she is far braver than she ever thought.

Q. What is the character Patrick like?

A. He wants nothing more than to help Clarie. He is crazy about her, even at the beginning. He’s strong, confident, loving, and protective. More than once in the story, however, he is “rescued” by Clarie due to circumstances beyond his control.

Q. How would you describe the world of Mortgatha?

A. It is a shadow world, overrun by the Darkness. There is a story within the story of how the Darkness got so much power and how the Light was extinguished from Mortgatha. Clarie is caught up in the myth as much as she is in the world itself. Evil characters and spirits are everywhere, and things aren’t always the way they seem.

Q. Would you describe Where Darkness Walks as a YA book or can it be put in the new category of New Adult?

A. Yes and yes. It is an adventure, a love story, a mystery, a thriller. It was written with younger readers in mind, in that the characters are in their teens and there is little language or situations that would be inappropriate for teens. However, the story is exciting and I can’t think anyone under the age of 116 wouldn’t love it. It has a multi-generational appreciation…

Q. What inspired you to write Where Darkness Walks?

A. My sister. I was thinking about what kind of book I like to read and teach. I knew I wanted to write a book like that. When my sister, Diana, suggested the basic idea to this one, I knew immediately I would run with the idea! That’s why I dedicated the book to her.

Q. This is the first in a trilogy. Can you give an insight into the next in this series?

A. Yes, the next book is titled Tattered Heart. It isn’t about Clarie and Patrick, but about another character in Where Darkness Walks. The third book continues with all the characters.

Q. What about Where Darkness Walks will attract readers to it?

A. I think they’ll like Mortgatha, even while they’re afraid of being there. I think Clarie and Patrick are truly good people, just thrown together in a bad situation. There’s never “helplessness” to them, only the ability to try to understand their situation and figure out how to overcome it. It has everything: romance, mystery, supernatural, relics (that I personally would like to own) and closure.

Q. What is your favorite part of the book and why?

A. Oh, tough question. Probably the last part because, if you read carefully, you may have a question or two that will lead you into the next book.

Q. Who is your favorite character in the book?

A. I love Clarie. But Patrick would be any girl’s dream.

Q. What was the hardest character to write in Where Darkness Walks?

A. Bulldog. He is a foul human being. My first draft was so foul-mouthed that I had to completely scrap it and try to write it so the reader would understand how he is, but not have to read a string of four-letter words.

Q. Will Clarie be in all three books or will each focus on new characters?

A. Yes, she is in all three books, but the second book is not about her, nor is it ever told from her point of view. In the second book, you get to know a different character much better.

Q. What genre is your favorite and why?

A. Young Adult fantasy, by far. I think I love it because the stories are usually more about the situation than strictly about the relationship. I love romance in a story, but I really like substance to the story along with the romance. Once the girl has her man, there has to be more to pull them together.

L.M. David: That concludes this interview. Remember, if you want a free copy of Where Darkness Walks, leave a comment and your email address. The winner will be contacted by Aoife Sheridan, Saskia Book Tours.

Book Blurb from Where Darkness Walks:

Clarie’s world is about to change for the darker. Rand broke up with her at the prom, she uncovers a secret in the hidden back of an armoire, and she meets Patrick, who is determined to help her forget her broken heart.
As Clarie evades classmate Bulldog’s stalking, she and Patrick explore the dark halls of an abandoned cement plant. After following Clarie and Patrick deep inside, Bulldog confronts Clarie as he fights with Patrick. When she is accidentally pushed against a set of dark doors into the shadow realm of Mortgatha, everything she fears is set into motion to keep her away from her beloved Earth world.

Even with Patrick’s help, the doorway home moves randomly, evil characters beset them at every turn, and the way home seems farther away than ever.
