Why do whips make a cracking sound when snapped? I wanted to know the answer before testing the theory on someone butt.

The answer: Whips can attain the speed of more than seven hundred miles per hour when snapped, breaking the sound barrier. What you are hearing is a mini sonic boom when they snap. Guess it’s not okay to snap it against someone’s bottom.
